There were three reasons why I wanted to read this book-
1. Everyone seemed to be crazy about this book
2.I felt like the only human who hasn’t read this
3.It was compared to To Kill A Mockingbird
If the rating system was more flexible, I would give this wonderful novel infinite stars – that’s how much I loved it !
This book made me laugh, it made me cry and overall just happy about everything in life.
I don’t know why I was so reluctant to read this book at first. Maybe because I was so sure I would be let down. Everyone was talking about it and all that hype scares me.
The funny thing I read this book while I was in the hospital for 1 week and feeling dazed, sick, weak all the time. I hate hospitals and needless , to say I was extremely unhappy. Reading The Help brought a smile to my face and honestly, made my stay at the hospital more bearable (otherwise I would have gone crazy). I read this book slowly, savoring each moment and it has been worth it.
There are books which you read once and remember all your life. The Help is such a book for me. It was touching and more importantly, a learning experience for me.
Humanity is something which we all mostly ignore nowadays – so engrossed we are with ourselves, our family, our needs. All of us tend to see humans in terms of categories – categories of gender, race, religion, nationality. When we stop putting humans into boxes , that’s when we realize that in the end, we are all the same , regardless of any differences..we are still all humans. That’s what this book taught me. This is a lesson that will stay with me all my life.
The Help is a depiction of social conditions in Jackson , Mississippi in the 1960s. It is narrated by three women – Aibeleen is an African-American woman who has worked as a maid for years and has looked after 17 white children in her lifetime, Miss Skeeter is a 23 year old white woman who has just returned home from college and is dreaming of being a writer and Minnie is an Agrican-Ame

The depth of the characters and their voices hold you while reading this book. I’m generally a non-fiction reader but this author writes so beautifully that I felt I was watching a movie. The range of emotions that the characters experience flowed to me as the reader. Some situations made me uncomfortable for the characters…now THAT’S a well-written piece.
I highly recommend spending a few hours with this cast.

I’m such a skeptic for stuff like this, but decided to try it after reading so many great reviews. I was really surprised at how well it worked. We have an Australian shepherd mix who sheds like crazy and gets badly matted around her ears if we don’t keep an eye on it. This product has really worked wonders for her! It’s actually very easy and quick to use. She loves when we use it. She looks better and feels softer after each use. And I’ve definitely noticed a decrease in the amount of hair tufts we have rolling around on our hardwood floors. I highly recommend to anyone with a long haired, shedding dog!

I purchased an adapter from OPTIMUM SOLUTION
The plug was too loose, but the adapter worked okay for 12 months.
It died 3 days after that. The answer was “sorry your warranty expired.”
It’s fine if you only need it for 1 year.
Otherwise my advice is: “DO NOT BUY!”

A Genuine, True Classic. Once you read it again, you realize what a profound effect it had on American literature at the time. What a tragedy that Salinger went into seclusion and deprived the world (except his family) of his talent. Hopefully a family member will publish his work soon. The Catcher in the Rye

This product is functioning well. It’s a great mixer that has performed well up to this point and for the price, you can’t “beat” it.

The system was in OK condition for not what I expected for what I paid. I had to replace the wireless bar that receives the remotes commands because the wire had been cut, and for that cost I could have just paid the extra 20.00 for a new system instead of 20 less for the used one. I am not real happy about this.

***SPOILER ALERT***
Put this novel on the FUN READ shelf. Definitely nothing mind-blowing in terms of plot or prose but a very entertaining look at depression era circus life.
The author alternates (for the most part) chapters between Jacob’s life during the depression and his life as a 90 year old in a nursing home. One gets the sense that the author seeks to evoke some sympathy for the 90 year Jacob’s plight. In this endeavor she fails as she never fully fleshes out his relationship with his children. Thus the reader is left feeling slightly apathetic as to his plight as a lonely and ornery old man wasting away in a assisted living facility.
Finally, the ending is a bit contrived and convenient. The frail old Jacob making a break for it out of the retirement home and going to the circus event that is in town. There of course he meets and befriends one of the circus directors who spirits him away on their cross country tour. Happily ever blah blah blah.
All of this is not to discourage someone from reading this novel. The author can write with rhythm and keeps the pacing light and quick. Viewing the novel as a love story, the author is adept at capturing the dual emotional nature of love with phrases like: “exhausted and recharged, desperate and fulfilled.” With a good writer, this book would make a great movie.
