The other day I was at a store and saw a little boy excited to get on and ride the escalator. Nothing was passing through his head about being cool, about pretending it was routine for him, no embarrassment, just plain excitement. Holden Caulfield would have said, “He kills me.”

The thing is that we grow out of that and into something else — a much more self-conscious, socially aware, socially anxious, strategic, plotting . . . adult. Caulfield doesn’t like that — it’s full of “phonies.” How do you grow into an adult without becoming a “phony?” As Caulfield says, “How would you know you weren’t being a phony? The trouble is, you wouldn’t.” You could be phony about being phony, priding yourself on your non-phoniness, on your seeing through everybody else’s phoniness. You never know.

If you’re like me, and you haven’t read A Catcher in the Rye for a very long time, it’s worth a re-read (or maybe two).

I think this book is a classic for a reason. Most people might be able to identify with the overall them of confusion, rebellion, loneliness and angst. The writing style is very whimsical and different from most YA books. With all the slang thrown it, it kind of dates itself; however it forms a good idea of how people talked back then.

I’m not a big fan of Holden. He calls other people “phonies” while he doesn’t realize that he himself is a phony. His attitude and characterization doesn’t change at all at the end of the novel; in fact he just whines about problems and runs away from them instead of taking action. I don’t think this could count as a true coming of age novel as the character didn’t really grow from the experience.

After the second and third time of reading this book, I’m starting to love this book. It’s a fairly interesting read. The characterization is superb and so is the plot.

The system was in OK condition for not what I expected for what I paid. I had to replace the wireless bar that receives the remotes commands because the wire had been cut, and for that cost I could have just paid the extra 20.00 for a new system instead of 20 less for the used one. I am not real happy about this.
